Institutional Assessment and Improvement

The Assessment unit, under the direction of the Chief Strategist for Accreditation, Data Analytics, and Transformation Initiatives, operates with the perspective that accurate and available assessment data will lead to continuous improvements within individual units, interdepartmental collaborations, and the institution as an accredited body. The unit provides support and resources for the purpose of strengthening assessment and assessment reporting. Additionally, the unit functions as a liaison between higher-level university administrators and unit managers/program coordinators to resolve concerns related to assessment.

Purpose of Assessment

Johnson C. Smith University ongoing, comprehensive, and integrated research-based planning, assessment, and evaluation processes. These processes focus on institutional quality and effectiveness while promoting and striving for continuous improvement.

  • To improve student teaching and learning.
  • Design instruction to target the knowledge and skills students should have upon finishing a course or an academic program.
  • Evaluate changes made to continuously improve student teaching and learning.

Activity

Timeframe

All units review and revise (if applicable) their annual assessment plans

September

Unit annual assessment plans are submitted to the deans, department chairs, and vice presidents. After their review and approval, the annual assessment plans are updated in the university-approved assessment software system

By September 30

Units proceed to carry out the plan through the remainder of the year, implementing assessment activities and summarizing/analyzing results.

October-May

In each unit meet to discuss the information collected and how it will be used to improve teaching and learning and/or support services provided.

May and June

Each unit completes and submits its assessment report. For academic units, the assessment reports are due.

Last day of Contract (academic reports)

 

June 30th (nonacademic reports)

The Office of Accreditation, Data Analytics, and Transformation reviews all assessment reports and provides feedback

By August 31
