At Johnson C. Smith University (JCSU), we are dedicated to empowering our veteran students to successfully navigate their academic, social, and professional journeys. Our department offers a comprehensive support system designed to help you excel in your studies, build meaningful connections, and prepare for your future career. 

Vision  

To connect students, faculty, and staff community members to resources on campus and off campus that will facilitate success. The department provides critical access to postsecondary education and is uniquely positioned to promote equity and social mobility on the campus and the community which anchors the university, Johnson C. Smith University. The department also conducts research that strengthens opportunities and improves outcomes for students, faculty, staff, and the community--particularly those who are service/military connected.  

Mission

The department of Veterans and Military Affairs facilitates the retention of service-connected students in higher education.  The department offers an opportunity for academic enrichment and an opportunity to mitigate barriers to college completion. The department serves as the liaison between the Veteran/Military Student/ROTC/Family members and the various services that the campus and community provide by:  

  • Continuing the facilitation of the work of the Joint Services Transcript (JST) acceptance on the campus as well as continuing to establish certificate programs and other partnerships that will increase Veteran support services, recruitment, and student retention.  
  • Adhering to the 8 Keys to Veterans’ Success, as outlined by the U.S. Department of Education’s Office of Innovation and Improvement.  
  • Creating a culture of trust and connectedness across the campus community to promote well-being and success for veterans.  
  • Collaborating with local communities and organizations, including government agencies, to align and coordinate various services for veterans.  
  • Utilizing a uniform set of data tools to collect and track information on veterans, including demographics, retention and degree completion.  
  • Providing comprehensive professional development for faculty and staff on issues and challenges unique to veterans.

ADVOCATE We serve as a vital liaison between departmental staff and faculty, ensuring seamless communication and support. We also connect veterans with essential community resources to help you thrive both academically and personally. 

ROTC Our Army ROTC program offers JCSU students valuable leadership training and career opportunities. Join us to develop your leadership skills and advance your career. 

The Student Veterans of America (SVA) is dedicated to enhancing the social well-being of our veteran students. SVA offers professional development, leadership opportunities, and valuable networking connections. Join SVA to build a supportive community and advance your personal and professional growth. 

Veteran Resource Center

Our Veteran Resource Center is designed to give our students a place to relax, connect, and study. We support veterans, their spouses/dependents, and other military-related students. The center includes: 

  • Study Room 

  • Lounge 

  • Classroom 

VA Educational Benefits

Here are the steps for how students can utilize their VA Educational Benefits at JCSU

  1. Complete the VA Application for Educational Benefits
  2. Submit JCSU Veterans Request for Benefits Form.
    Please email this form to Registrar@jcsu.edu
    *This form only needs to be completed once
  3. Veterans Benefits Certification Request

    Submit form through the JCSU Portal
    Select Students then Student Resources then Veteran Benefits
    *This must be completed each semester after you have registered for classes
