2025 - 2026 Off-Campus Housing FAQs

This year, Johnson C. Smith University is utilizing additional housing locations to ensure every student has a safe, quality living space. These off-campus communities were selected for their amenities, proximity to campus, and ability to meet student needs.

We selected properties based on safety, location, transportation access, quality of living spaces, and the ability to meet our students’ needs. Each property is managed by a professional company with established security measures.

Housing assignments consider multiple factors, including proximity to campus, unit availability, and student needs. Sopme are farther from campus and not directly on the light rail, so we prioritized placing students with personal vehicles there. Properties closer to campus were assigned to students without vehicles or who may need easier walking or light rail access.

Yes. Off-campus housing costs are included in the overall cost of attendance and may be covered by financial aid, depending on your student’s individual award package. In addition, the University is supplementing the housing cost for students placed in off-campus locations and covering the cost of required renter’s insurance, so there is no added expense for your student in that area.

Roommate requests will be considered where possible. Students will receive their specific housing assignments by or before Tuesday, August 12, 2025.

The University is finalizing shuttle service plans for off-campus housing communities and will share details as soon as they are confirmed. Some are within walking distance and offer bikes/scooters, while others are near light rail access, offering additional transportation options.

Yes. All off-campus students retain full access to campus services, dining, academic resources, student life activities, and athletic events. We are committed to ensuring that students living off campus remain fully integrated into the JCSU community.

At some apartments, all units come fully furnished. Each bedroom includes a full-size bed and mattress, desk, chair, dresser, and a private en-suite restroom. Common areas are furnished with a leather sectional sofa, armchair, coffee table, bar stools for seating, and a 65" flat-screen smart TV. For other off-campus properties each bedroom will be furnished with a twin-size bed and a desk. All properties include a washer and dryer in every apartment.

Each of our partner properties has its own security measures, including controlled access and professional on-site management. We also work closely with property management teams to address safety concerns and provide ongoing support.

While there will not be live-in JCSU staff at each property, we will have dedicated campus-based staff assigned to support students living off-campus and serve as liaisons to property managers.

Some apartments are mixed communities with non-students; others are primarily student housing. In all cases, JCSU has worked to ensure safety and quality living environments.

Students in off-campus housing are held to the same standards of behavior as those living on campus. University policies apply, and Strategic Enrollment and Retention Management (SERM) staff will respond to any conduct issues.

Yes. Our master lease with one location extends through July 31, 2026. Students living at this property will have the option to remain in their unit beyond the end of the spring semester; however, they will be responsible for paying the additional 2.5 months of housing directly to the University. This option is not available for students living in the other off-campus properties, as those leases are for 10 months and end in May.
