Blue Cross Blue Shield of NC Donates $20,000 to Johnson C. Smith University to Support Student Success Initiatives

CHARLOTTE, N.C./ SEPT. 10, 2024 – Blue Cross Blue Shield proudly announced a generous donation of $20,000 to Johnson C. Smith University (JCSU) in support of its student success programs and community initiatives. This gift reflects Blue Cross Blue Shield’s ongoing commitment to fostering educational opportunities and advancing student development in underserved communities.

The $20,000 donation will directly benefit key programs at JCSU that aim to support student achievement, particularly among first-generation college students, and those pursuing post-secondary degrees. The funds will also help strengthen the University's initiatives focused on workforce development and career readiness. The donation will ensure students have access to the resources they need to thrive academically and personally.

“With such a generous donation, BCBS of NC is investing in education and supporting Historically Black Universities like Johnson C. Smith University is critical to building healthier and more equitable communities," said, Jennifer C. Joyner, director of the Smith Institute for Research, Career Development and Postgraduate Readiness. "Blue Cross Blue Shield remains a strong supporter of hiring and mentoring JCSU talent. Johnson C Smith is the first HBCU that they have partnered with to create a student internship program. They are proud to partner with JCSU to help empower the next generation of leaders, particularly those pursuing careers opportunities to build career readiness and soft skills."

Known for its strong commitment to producing graduates who are prepared to meet the challenges of today’s global society, JCSU is dedicated to supporting students through innovative programming, comprehensive support services, and strong community partnerships.

The $20,000 gift will be used to enhance the University’s career center, career closet and other initiatives that promote academic retention and graduation rates. Through this support, Blue Cross Blue Shield of NC and JCSU are working together to build healthier communities, both on campus and beyond.
