Pre Award

Government Sponsored Programs and Research (GSPAR) provides JCSU's constituents with services that include submitting, negotiating, and accepting awards on behalf of the Authorized Organizational Representative (AOR). Our pre-award team focuses on the development and submission aspects of the grant writing process.

GSPAR's pre-award team assists JCSU faculty and staff with:

  • Funding searches
  • Proposal development
  • Budget preparation
  • Electronic submission

Find a Funding Opportunity

Finding grant opportunities can be a struggle. Here's how you can start. When looking for grant opportunities, it is best to practice using official websites such as SAM.gov, Grants.gov, and state/local agency websites. Click the buttons below to find opportunities from our most common sponsors.

Here are just a few examples of federal agencies JCSU faculty have worked with!

Start with a Notice of Intent

GSPAR is rolling out a new Notice of Intent, now including a Questionnaire for Proposal Writers. This new Notice of Intent is designed to allow researchers to conceptualize their proposal in detail and facilitate discussions with department heads and Deans. The Notice of Intent also provides our office with an overview of your project and officially marks the start of your proposal submission. Email a GSPAR pre-award staff member for a copy.

Meet with Pre-Award Staff

After filling out your Notice of Intent, the pre-award team will reach out to schedule an introductory meeting.

In this meeting, we will discuss the following:

  • Discuss key elements of the RFP/ NOFO
  • Discuss key sponsor requirements for your grant
  • Establish a plan for monitoring your submission process
  • Answer initial questions

Develop Your Proposal

In between the introductory meeting and final budget meeting, it's time to write! The Office of Sponsored Programs is happy to proofread and answer questions as you write your project narrative and develop your budget.

Final Review and Submission

The Office of Sponsored Programs will schedule a follow up meeting with the Assistant Director of Grants and Contracts Administration to review and finalize your budget. Researchers are expected to have a complete draft of their budget before this meeting. Our office requires full proposals to be submitted for final review three (3) business days before the sponsor's submission deadline. This will allow researchers and pre-award staff ample time to ensure your proposal meets all sponsor requirements, prevent technical difficulties, and ultimately, deliver a proposal you're happy with. The pre-award team is responsible for electronic submission of your proposal to the sponsor.

Breast Cancer Awareness
Dr. Harriette Richard is no stranger to the challenges of breast cancer. As a three-time survivor of the disease, the JCSU associate professor of Psychology decided she wanted to explore the effect the disease has on older African-American women. Richard was awarded a $100,000 grant from Atrium Wake Forest Baptist Health to further research the connections between body image and breast cancer, specifically in the experiences of older adult African-American women’s mastectomy experiences.
