The CIAA tournament is a time for student athletes to shine on and off the court; and this year’s, Student Athlete Empowerment Symposium offered some Johnson C. Smith University student-athlete leaders the opportunity to fellowship and discuss the importance of mental health and the 2020 Census.

Dr. Helen Caldwell is credited with creating what is now known as the School of Social Work on the campus of Johnson C. Smith University, in which she serves as dean. As a social worker of nearly 40 years, she prides herself on her work, and the impact she’s made on faculty and students at the University.

Johnson C. Smith University’s School of Social Work is accepting donations for the Dorothy I. Height Scholarship Fund, aimed at furthering the well-being of students continuing the legacy of the iconic social worker.

Justice Jackson ’21 attended the 2020 conference Beyond the Yard: Your Path, Your Future, sponsored by Amazon from January 31 – February 2, 2020.

Before the start of the fall semester, Cameron Mitchell ’19 learned he was selected to intern for Congresswoman Alma Adams. Mitchell, a Charlotte native, served as Congressional Press Intern to Adams, who serves North Carolina’s 12th Congressional District in which Johnson C. Smith is located.

For Tawanda Nyahasha '20, the power of his pen and voice, has led him from his home country of Zimbabwe, Africa to Johnson C. Smith University. The creative wordsmith recently released his first book of poetry entitled "The Burdens of a Wise Man."

Dejah Gilliam ’16 was used to working in the fast lanes as a member of NASCAR’s Integrated Marketing Communications Department. The former Johnson C. Smith University communication arts major is shifting gears and joined the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office. 

Since graduating from Johnson C. Smith University, Diondre Pratt ’16 has accomplished yet another goal. January 29, 2020 he was sworn in as an officer with the Salisbury Police Department.

Three Charlotte universities are banding together to support racial healing and transformation. As the Charlotte Racial Justice Consortium, UNC Charlotte, Johnson C. Smith University, and Queens University of Charlotte will collaborate to listen to Charlotte’s many racial truths, encourage a community that understands its history of race and racism, and develop student, university, and community leaders who work across our region towards truth, racial healing, and equity.

It’s not every day you get to golf with a professional athlete, but for two members of Johnson C. Smith University’s golf team, that dream became a reality.  Victor A. Beatty ’20 and Myles Moore ’21 had the opportunity to hit the course off with Carolina Panthers safety Tre Boston last month.
