Seven JCSU teams to compete over four days; HBCU Legacy Bowl

Charlotte, NC/Feb 20, 2026 - A busy weekend for Johnson C. Smith University Golden Bulls athletics, as seven teams will be in action over the next four days.



Events kick off on Friday as the JCSU softball team travels to Hardeeville, South Carolina, to participate in the Sand Shark Invitational hosted by the University of South Carolina Beaufort. The Golden Bulls will take on the Sand Sharks, the host school and UNC Pembroke in the three-day event. The single game will take place at the Richard Gray Sports Complex. The softball team is looking for their first win on the season after falling to North Grenville, 23-1 and 15-0.
 


The Golden Bulls women's bowling team will compete in the 2026 CIAA Bowling Round-up hosted by Bowie State University on Friday, Feb. 20 through Sunday, Feb. 22 at the Annapolis Bowling Center located in Annapolis, Maryland. The Golden Bulls will bowl five matches over the three-day event. Traditional team matches will begin at 10:40 a.m. on Friday, followed by a 9:40 a.m. start on Saturday (traditional team matches). Baker matches will conclude the final day, beginning at 9:30 a.m.



The Track and Field teams will travel to Winston-Salem, North Carolina to compete in the Last Chance meet host by JDL track. This even will take place on Saturday, Feb. 21. This is an all day event.



The basketball teams will close out their final home game of the season, as both teams take on Claflin University. It is also Senior Day as 10 student-athletes (six for the men and four for the women) will be recognized and play their last game in Gold and Blue inside Brayboy Gym. Tip-off for the women will be at 1 p.m., followed by the men. Both teams are looking to close out their regular-season home game with a win, heading into tournament play.
 
Head football coach Maurice Flowers, along with student-athletes Kelvin Durham, DeAndre Proctor and Daryl Taybron, will be on display Saturday, Feb. 21, at the 2026 All State HBCU Legacy Bowl at Tulane's Yulman Stadium in New Orleans, Louisiana. The kickoff is set for 4:00 p.m., and will be televised live by the NFL Network.
 
Wrapping up a busy weekend, the Golden Bulls men's golf team will compete in the ARCIS HBCU Championships in Weston, Florida.  The third annual Arcis-HBCU Golf Championship takes place Saturday, Feb. 21 to Monday, Feb. 23, at The Club at Weston Hills in Weston, Fla.. The tournament brings together 17 men’s and women’s teams from Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) to compete over 54 holes, offering student-athletes opportunities to compete, network, and explore career paths.
 
The 95-player field (seven women’s teams, 12 men’s teams) will include 2025 champions Florida A&M University (men’s Div. I), Livingstone College (men’s Div. II), and Howard University (women’s).
 
Other participating schools include Chicago State University, Southern University, Texas Southern University, Prairie View A&M University, Delaware State University, Virginia State University, North Carolina A&T State University, North Carolina Central University, Winston-Salem State University, Alabama A&M University, Miles College, Savannah State University, and Alabama State University.

Winning Ethics Bowl Team
North Carolina Independent Colleges and Universities (NCICU) celebrated an important milestone this weekend as student teams from across the state gathered at the North Carolina Legislative Complex for the 15th Annual Ethics Bowl. This year’s competition, centered on the theme “Ethics in Leadership,” culminated in a historic first as Johnson C. Smith University became the first Historically Black College/University (HBCU) to reach the finals and prevail as champion.

What does it mean to build wealth in a society where access has never been equal—and how do education, sacrifice, and community shape what is possible for the next generation?   That question framed the Queen City News Black History Month Special: Black Wealth, filmed February 5, 2026, on the campus of Johnson C. Smith University inside the historic Jane M. Smith Memorial Church. The panel convened leaders in higher education, finance, professional sports, and civic engagement for a wide-ranging discussion on wealth creation, equity, and intergenerational responsibility.
