Inaugural events will include an expert symposium on economic mobility, gala, community service day and more

CHARLOTTE, N.C. / March 18, 2019 – Johnson C. Smith University (JCSU) will celebrate the inauguration of its 14th president, Clarence D. “Clay” Armbrister, J.D., with a series of events – from the university’s annual gala to an economic mobility symposium – set for April 3-7, 2019.

Distinguished guests, including former Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter, Congresswoman Alma S. Adams, Ph. D., Charlotte Mayor Vi Lyles and other notable leaders, will give remarks at various events throughout the week. Armbrister’s formal installment ceremony will take place Friday, April 5, at 10 a.m., in the Jack S. Brayboy Gymnasium at JCSU.

Armbrister began his term as president on January 1, 2018, but the investiture will mark his official transition. He previously served as president of Girard College and held senior administrative positions at Temple University, Johns Hopkins University and the School District of Philadelphia. Armbrister’s address will revolve around the theme “Rise to the Pinnacle: Light the World,” and he will discuss his vision and how JCSU is uniquely positioned to provide students with opportunities that can lead to upward social and economic mobility.

“Over the past 15 months, President Armbrister has shown immense passion and dedication for the holistic education of our students,” said Shirley J. Hughes, chair of the JCSU Board of Trustees. “We are excited to officially recognize him as a member of the JCSU family, and we look forward to working with and supportinghis vision for our great university.”

The Community Symposium will feature a candid discussion by prominent Charlotte civic leaders on economic mobility and the critical role HBCUs, and JCSU in particular, have in leveling the playing field in our community. Speakers include: Malcomb Coley, EY Carolinas Market Leader and Charlotte Managing Partner; Stephanie Cooper-Lewter, Executive Director, Leading on Opportunity; Alisahah Cole, Chief Community Impact Officer, Atrium Health; and Laura Clark, President and CEO, United Way Central Carolinas.
