University College and Student Success

Supporting our students

Designed to facilitate academic excellence and career preparation for all students at the university, the University College provides wrap-around, holistic experiences that offer broad groupings of inclusive educational opportunities, services, and supports for student engagement and success. The college houses six divisions: Center for Student Success and Academic Excellence, Smith Institute for Research, Career Development and Post Graduate Readiness, Biddle Institute, McNair Scholars Program, Student Support Services, and Upward Bound. Each division exists to foster and fulfill the mission of Johnson C. Smith University. 

Our Mission

Our mission is to provide high-quality academic support and high-impact experiences that facilitate successful student transition to a degree program and promotes student development as life-long learners and global leaders. 

Center for Student Success and Academic Excellence

Provides incoming and continuing students with success skills and access to resources needed to achieve academic excellence.

Smith Institute for Research, Career Development, and Post Graduate Readiness

Provides students with guidance and high-impact experiences to become leaders in their chosen career paths.

Biddle Institute

Coordinates and deliver intrusive support services to students who enter the University via strengths-based programs.

McNair Scholars Program

Provides grant-eligible students with mentoring and skill development experiences to prepare for and pursue graduate degree study.

Student Support Services

Provides grant-eligible students with resources and support toward successful completion of their undergraduate education.

Upward Bound

Provides educational opportunities for grant-eligible students living in targeted areas in Charlotte, North Carolina.
