Tennis Programs Named ITA All-Academic Team, Six Players Honored as All-Academic Scholar-Athletes

The Johnson C. Smith University women's tennis team was named to the 2019 Intercollegiate Tennis Association All-Academic Team and six Golden Bulls earned individual ITA Scholar-Athlete honors, the ITA announced Thursday. This year the Intercollegiate Tennis Association saw an increase in qualifying teams and scholar-athletes. All-Academic honors were awarded to 940 teams and thousands of scholar-athletes.

New Director of Public Safety, Jermaine Cherry, outlines plans for 2019-20 school year

Johnson C. Smith University’s new Director of Public Safety, Jermaine Cherry, is wasting no time getting to work. The chief officially joined in July and is outlining his plan for the school year, before students arrive for the fall semester. With a background in campus policing, at East Carolina University and North Carolina A&T State University, Cherry is hoping to bring his expertise of partnerships, student engagement and traditional community policing to JCSU.

The Black Ink Monks, Johnson C. Smith University’s oldest non-greek organization, returned to the American Hebrew Academy (AHA) in Greensboro, N.C. in January of 2019. Their annual trip educates AHA students about spoken word – using oratory skills for self-expression, anger management, and education.

Charlotte-based retailer, Belk, is providing professional work attire for students at Johnson C. Smith University. With the help of the university’s business advisory board, Belk donated approximately eight bags of clothes, consisting of dresses, skirts, ties and shirts, to the professional clothes closet located in the Center for Career Development on campus.

Basketball Alumnus develops training program, gives back to youth

Former Johnson C. Smith University Golden Bull Richard Daniels, Jr., is giving back an opportunity that was given to him at a young age.

Daniels is the owner of a basketball training program called NeverOutWorked, or N.O.W. for short, which specializes in individual training that is tailored to each child, specifically from the ages of 8 and up. The training is for boys and girls.
