Tuition Increases for 2026-2027 Academic Year

For 159 years, Johnson C. Smith University has been rooted in legacy and tradition while fostering an inclusive environment of excellence. As an HBCU that provides transformative experiences, we educate and cultivate resilient learners and graduate students who become global leaders. Through collaboration, creativity, and innovation in our classrooms and communities, we prepare students to develop a compelling sense of civic and social responsibility (see https://www.jcsu.edu/who-we-are/vision-mission-and-values).

We recognize that any increase in cost is a concern for students and families, and decisions of this nature are not made lightly. Over the past several years, however, the University has faced sustained increases in the cost of essential operations—such as utilities, repairs and maintenance, technology, and personnel—driven by inflation, market volatility, and rising labor costs. These increases directly affect the services, facilities, and support systems that students rely on every day.

After careful review of the University’s financial position and a commitment to maintaining academic quality and student support, the University will implement tuition adjustments effective at the start of the 2026–27 academic year. Undergraduate and evening/online tuition will increase by 5 percent, and graduate tuition will increase by 8 percent. This represents an increase of $555 per semester for undergraduate students and $925 per semester for graduate students.

Additional adjustments include campus housing, which will increase by $150 to $225 per semester depending on occupancy type and location, and the meal plan, which will increase to $2,200 per semester.

These changes are necessary to ensure the University remains financially stable and able to continue offering high‑quality instruction, safe and well‑maintained residential facilities, academic advising, student support services, and co‑curricular experiences that prepare students for success after graduation. While cost containment efforts remain a priority, these increases help address unavoidable expenses and protect the long‑term strength of the institution.

The University remains committed to access and affordability and encourages students and families to engage with Financial Aid staff to review available aid, scholarships, and payment options. Our goal is to support students as they pursue their education while ensuring the University can continue to serve future generations.  Johnson C. Smith University remains committed to helping dreams become realities and futures shine bright. Always, let there be light (Sit Lux).

The University’s website will be updated in the coming days with full details regarding these changes.
