Johnson C. Smith University named Best HBCU by Intelligent.com

Charlotte, N.C. / March 23, 2021 – Intelligent.com, a trusted resource for online degree rankings and higher education planning, has announced the Top 49 Colleges In North Carolina for 2021. Of the 10 Historically Black Colleges and Universities across the state, the site named Johnson C. Smith University as the best HBCU.

According to the data, Johnson C. Smith University is also:

  • Among the top 6 HBCUs ranked in North Carolina
  • Ranked top private HBCU in North Carolina

The comprehensive research guide is based on an assessment of 197 accredited colleges and universities in the nation. Each program is evaluated based on curriculum quality, graduation rate, reputation, and post-graduate employment.

The 2021 rankings are calculated through a unique scoring system which includes student engagement, potential return on investment and leading third party evaluations. Intelligent.com analyzed 197 schools, on a scale of 0 to 100, with only 49 making it to the final list. The methodology also uses an algorithm which collects and analyzes multiple rankings into one score to easily compare each school.

Stroud on stage being interviewed
Otis Stroud was the voice of the Johnson C. Smith University Golden Bulls for nearly fifty years, 1977-2025.  The voice echoed throughout the Eddie McGirt Field and across the court of the Brayboy Gymnasium. It was deep, resonant, and resolute: scoring history-in-action.  At the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Stroud energized crowds, calling championship games for more than 30 years, turning competitive matchups into near cinematic experiences: action-packed, dramatic and consequential.
