Charlotte, N.C. / May 2, 2025 — Johnson C. Smith University is proud to announce its distinguished speaker for the 2025 Commencement Ceremonies. The University’s 152nd Commencement will take place on Sunday, May 18, 2025, at 11 a.m. at Bojangles Coliseum, featuring acclaimed television personality, comedian and philanthropist Sheryl Underwood as the keynote speaker.

Renowned for her sharp wit, insightful commentary and unwavering advocacy for education and community empowerment, Underwood will bring a dynamic presence to the stage. As a co-host of The Talk on CBS, a U.S. Air Force veteran and a passionate supporter of HBCUs, she has exemplified resilience, service and excellence—values that align powerfully with the mission of JCSU.

“Ms. Sheryl Underwood’s life and career reflect the brilliance, strength and purpose we cultivate in our students,” said Dr. Valerie Kinloch, president of Johnson C. Smith University. “Her message will undoubtedly inspire our graduates as they embark on the next chapter of their lives.”

Underwood will receive an honorary doctorate during the Commencement Ceremonies.  She embodies what it means to be a Smithite. She is an astute businesswoman and entrepreneur and serves as an inspiration for a great number of individuals who embrace their passions and creative energy to capitalize on opportunities in the marketplace. This aligns with our College of Business and Professional Studies program to empower our student-entrepreneurs as they develop and launch new businesses.

Underwood’s commitment to education, health, and wellness coalesces with JCSU’s holistic approach to educating students and uplifting communities.

Underwood is a proud alumna of the University of Illinois at Chicago and holds several honorary doctorates, including from Benedict College and South Carolina State University. A lifetime member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc., she continues to advocate for social justice, women’s health, and the advancement of Black communities across the nation.

JCSU’s 152nd Commencement is open to the public.
