Bowie Md./ April 25, 2026 - On April 24–25, 2026, the Johnson C. Smith University (JCSU) Percussion Studio achieved a major milestone with the first-ever “Exchange Masterclass” experience for the JCSU Music Program. Five talented JCSU percussion students traveled to Bowie State University to participate in a collaborative masterclass workshop with Dr. Donnie Johns and the Bowie State University Percussion Ensemble.
Under the leadership of Mr. Ricardo Reese (Visiting Artist Clinician), the JCSU Percussion Ensemble presented a variety of ensemble and solo works. In an energizing setting, our students not only performed but also received hands-on, constructive feedback from Dr. Johns and members of the Bowie State University Percussion Ensemble—insights that will strengthen our sound, musicianship, and performance preparation.
A True Exchange—Performing, Listening, and Growing Together
One of the most meaningful aspects of this event was the spirit of mutual learning. JCSU students also had the opportunity to listen to and offer feedback on the Bowie State ensemble—creating a true exchange of artistry and musicianship between the two groups.
Student-Led Masterclass Leadership
The experience was elevated even further when JCSU students were granted a unique opportunity to conduct their own masterclass session for a group of middle school percussionists who were in attendance. This moment highlighted our students' leadership potential and offered a powerful opportunity to inspire the next generation of percussionists.
Performances at the Same Time, for the Same Mission
Both JCSU and Bowie State participants received an additional surprise during the day—each group was asked to perform for a Violin Conference taking place in Bowie State University’s Fine and Performing Arts Center. These quick turnarounds showcased professionalism, versatility, and the confidence of JCSU’s young musicians.
Special Thanks to Our Alumni Chapters and Event Support
We also extend special thanks and deep appreciation to the Baltimore Alumni Chapter and the Washington, D.C. Alumni Chapter for their generous donations supporting this exchange for our students. Your commitment to the JCSU Music Program helped make this historic learning experience possible—directly strengthening our students’ development and expanding the impact of our percussion studio.
Additionally, we would like to thank Marcus Geter from the JCSU Band’s media team for capturing video and photos of the event, helping preserve this important moment for our students and community. We also thank Tyrone Taylor, II, President of the Theta Mu Chapter of Kappa Kappa Psi, for assisting with the event.
Moving Forward with Momentum
By the conclusion of the event, all students and instructors left Bowie State University extremely motivated and excited about the quality and impact of this exchange. The success of this experience marks the end of another outstanding performance season for the JCSU Percussion Studio and Percussion Ensemble—and it also signals the beginning of exciting opportunities ahead.
Invitation for the Future: PAS “A Day of Percussion”
As a final highlight, Dr. Donnie Johns extended an invitation for the JCSU Percussion Ensemble to participate in the Percussive Arts Society (PAS) “A Day of Percussion” for the local chapter in January 2027.
From historic collaboration to student leadership and community inspiration, the Exchange Masterclass at Bowie State University was a remarkable achievement for JCSU. We are grateful for the partnership, mentorship, and shared commitment to excellence that made it possible.
