Charlotte, N.C./June 8, 2023 – Johnson C. Smith University celebrated its first class of Smitty Scholars during Steele Creek Preparatory Academy’s 8th grade graduation Thursday.

The graduation, which took place in Truist Auditorium in JCSU’s New Science Center, was the first of its kind on campus and featured special remarks from JCSU administrators and staff, Steele Creek Preparatory Academy staff and Smitty himself.

“The primary focus of this program is to plant seeds by partnering with our local community middle school 8th graders to motivate, encourage and embrace their accomplishments as they take the next step to high school,” said Octavius S. Rice, residence hall coordinator in the Division of Student Affairs and Enrollment Management.

More than 30 students graduated, including Devan L. Moss, who graduated with the highest honors in the class.

Dr. Davida L. Haywood ’98, vice president for Student of Affairs and Enrollment Management, shared lines from one of Dr. Seuss’ most popular books, “Oh, the Places You Will Go!”

Se encouraged students to take control of their journeys and look forward to what the future has to offer.
“I welcome you to a magical place; a place with more than 156 years of history,” she said. “To our graduates today, you are now honorary Golden Bulls. In a couple of years, we’d love you to return for your freshman year here at JCSU.”

Wanda Foy-Boroughs ’73, director of Alumni Relations, encouraged the graduates to dream big because their dreams can become concreate, attainable goals at in college, and especially at her alma mater JCSU.

“This place is buzzing with endless possibilities and limitless opportunities,” she said. “Knowledge is power. College provides a platform for intellectual growth and allows you to explore your passions.”

While this was the first graduation ceremony the University has hosted, it isn’t the first time JCSU has partnered with Steele Creek Preparatory Academy.

Rice said that the Division of Student Affairs and Enrollment Management had teamed up with the school’s principal, Dr. Darrell Cotton, to establish the Smitty Tutoring Corner, which gave K-5 students at the school access to free tutoring.

Guest speaker Boyd George spoke to the graduates about the importance of listening to the guidance of their parents, even if they don’t quite understand the decisions they make or their motivations. He remembered how his own mother, a high school dropout, set him on the path to academic success and encouraged him to surround himself with likeminded, motivated people.

The ceremony ended with a presentation of certificates and a group photo of the students on the steps of historic Biddle Hall. JCSU is proud to collaborate with and celebrate the accomplishments of local schools. Congratulations to the 8th grade class of 2023 from Steele Creek Preparatory Academy!
