DURHAM, N.C./November 24, 2025 — Before taking the field for the CIAA Football Championship, the Johnson C. Smith University Golden Bulls made an impact off the field with a meaningful community service project at the Durham Rescue Mission, an organization that supports more than 550 men, women, and children every day.
The team spent the morning volunteering alongside staff at the Mission, assisting with organizing donations, preparing goods for distribution, and helping the facility continue its 50-year tradition of providing hope, housing, and healing for families across the Triangle.
Leaders at the Durham Rescue Mission expressed deep gratitude for the Golden Bulls’ time and service.
“The Durham Rescue Mission supports over 550 men, women, and children every day. We’re a long-term, faith-based residency and we subsist entirely on private donations and volunteer activity,” a Mission representative shared. “The fact that the CIAA would send this team here to do so much work for us is a real blessing and shows a great spirit of community. We are extremely grateful for them choosing us for today’s activity, and we look forward to much more partnership in the future.”
This community-focused initiative aligns with JCSU’s commitment to service, leadership, and uplifting the communities the University touches — values that echo far beyond the football field.
Head Coach Maurice Flowers said he wanted his student-athletes to understand that championship-caliber teams aren’t defined solely by wins, but by character.
“We talk every day about purpose, humility, and serving others,” Flowers said. “Being here today is part of who we are as Golden Bulls — leaders, students, and men who give back.”
For the players, the experience was another reminder that representing JCSU is bigger than football.
As the Golden Bulls prepared to compete for the CIAA title, they carried with them not only the pride of the Gold-and-Blue, but also the impact they made in the Durham community.
