A Champion Celebrates a Champion

New Orleans, La./Nov 24, 2024 - Dr. James Ewers was a featured speaker on a program recently which honored star tennis player, Coco Gauff.

She provided funds along with the United States Tennis Association for the refurbishment of the Joe Brown Park Tennis Courts in New Orleans Louisiana.

In his remarks, Ewers said, "Not only is she a world class tennis player, she's a world class human being."

While at the courts, she gave instruction and hit with the kids.

"New Orleans is an important community to me. I grew up coming here. I love the culture. I love the food," said Gauff. 

New Orleans was one of a select number of facilities chosen by Gauff's family to receive improvements.

CIAA Hall of Famer Ewers was a member of two championship teams and holds the school record of having won 34 consecutive singles matches. He is an author and chairperson of the JCSU Tennis Legacy Endowment Committee.

The Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA), the nation’s oldest Historically Black Athletic Conference, announces the brackets for its 2026 Food Lion CIAA Men’s and Women’s Basketball Tournament. The single elimination tournament will be held at CFG Bank Arena in Baltimore, Maryland, Tuesday, February 24 through Saturday, February 28. Championship Saturday will feature the women’s title game at 1 p.m. followed by the men’s championship at 4 p.m.
