Arch of Triumph Gala 2026 Celebrates Leadership in this New Era of Excellence

CHARLOTTE, N.C. / April 25, 2026 - In an elegant evening that celebrated the power of philanthropy and local leadership, Johnson C. Smith University honored four distinguished alumni during the 2026 Arch of Triumph Gala.  It was an unforgettable highlight of Founders Week.

Held inside the Crown Ballroom of the Charlotte Convention Center, students, faclty, staff, alumni, and community members gathered for the AOT Gala.  The crowning event raised more than $420,000 for student scholarships, underscoring the university's commitment to access and opportunity in what President Valerie Kinloch has called a "New Era of Excellence."

During the evening, JCSU celebrated four alumni whose lives and careers reflect the enduring mission of Johnson C. Smith University.

Jessica Williams '04, known to many as "Ms. Jessica the Girl Next Door," was recognized for her dynamic voice in radio and her deep connection to community storytelling. Her journey from student broadcaster to award-winning media personality reflects the power of authenticity and influence.

Malcolm Graham '85, a respected leader on the Charlotte City Council and former state senator was honored for decades of public service and advocacy in Charlotte. In his remarks, Graham emphasized responsibility and legacy, reminding students and attendees alike that "for those who came before us, we all have a responsibility to open doors for those coming behind us."

John T. Crawford '60, a trailblazer in business and corporate leadership, was celebrated for a career defined by excellence in teaching, institution-building, and deep mentorship. His legacy reflects a lifelong commitment to opening pathways for others in the education and philanthropic spaces.

In a stellar moment,  Civil Rights pioneer Dorothy Counts-Scoggins '64 received the final award of the evening. Known nationally for her courage as one of the first Black students to integrate Charlotte schools in 1957, Counts-Scoggins spoke warmly about her lifelong connection to the university.

"Eighty years ago, I first walked onto this campus with my parents," she said. "Every time I walk onto this campus, I say, 'I am home.'"

Throughout the evening, speakers reflected on the university's growing momentum-from rising enrollment and academic innovation to strengthened community partnerships across Charlotte's Historic West End.

President Kinloch shared her deep gratitude to donors and supporters, emphasizing the collective impact of giving.

"Because of you, our students are able to dream bigger, achieve more, and walk confidently into their futures," she said. "This is what a New Era of Excellence looks like."

The gala also featured vibrant entertainment and a celebratory atmosphere, culminating in a high-energy performance by Grammy-nominated artist Musiq Soulchild, who brought the audience to its feet. DJ SNS closed the evening in style with a high energy set, featuring line dances and hip hop beats.
