ATLANTA /Sept. 7, 2024 - The Johnson C. Smith University Golden Bulls pulled out the second win of the season against the Morehouse Maroon Tigers of the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) on Saturday, September 7, 2024 in Atlanta. The final score: 37-13!
JCSU brought the herd to Atlanta for the big game. A huge delegation of students, faculty, staff, and alumni filled the stands, cheering on the Golden Bulls with great excitement.
Dr. Judith Billingsley, Assistant Professor of social work, was thrilled to see Smith fans at the game in full force, decked out in gold and blue.
"Phenomenal, overwhelming. We packed the house! We traveled from near and far. I am so excited to see the number of faculty and administration. I am excited to see the number of students who are here. IF the season is going to be like this. We're Ready!"
The JCSU International Institution of Sound, the Luv-A-Bulls and the JCSU Blue Satin Dance Line brought the rhythm and enlivened the crowd as the Johnson C. Smith University football team brought the plays on the field!
Dr. Antonia Meade says the excitement of the day reminded her of the good old days.
"I am excited to see the joy in the students again, to see that the alumni traveled to see the team. It is amazing! I am overjoyed."
More than 50 students hopped on a bus and traveled miles from the Biddle Hall lot to Atlanta for the JCSU-Morehouse matchup. The royal court brought elegance and grace as the fans engaged in enthusiastic celebration, touchdown after touchdown.
Lamone Hill, a player on the JCSU football team, says the team is building momentum!
"2-0 starting off the season! We are ready to continue undefeated!"
That is the goal of player Steny Joseph, as well. He is excited about the team's success so far, but he is keeping the back-to-back wins against Tuskegee University and Morehouse College in perspective.
"It feels good. We have to take it one game at a time. I will take it seriously when we start beating VU and V State."
Coach Flowers says the JCSU athlete is a scholar-athlete, and that makes a difference.
"I am so proud of the fans. It is so satisfying to see the fans come and support us in the stands. We're experienced. These guys believed in the vision of the program. When we take the academics seriously, we take the action on the field more seriously. We have a commitment to everything every day."
The commitment of JCSU Athletics stretches from the classroom to the field, according to Coach Flowers and Dr. Denisha Hendricks, Director of Athletics. Up next: the JCSU Golden Bulls take on Lincoln University Lions on September 14th in the first home game of the season!
