JCSU wishes our condolences on the passing of Sarah Belk Gambrell

Charlotte, N.C./Aug. 05, 2020 – We send our deepest condolences to the family and friends of Sarah Belk Gambrell, an extended member of the Johnson C. Smith University family. The local philanthropist and iconic member of the Belk family supported the University with more than $115,000 in donations through the 1990s. Gambrell’s support for the education of JCSU students will forever be remembered. The auditorium in historic Biddle Hall was named the Sarah Belk Gambrell Auditorium in honor of her contributions to and advocacy for JCSU. “Mrs. Gambrell was a friend of Johnson C. Smith University,” said JCSU President Clarence D. Armbrister. “Her philanthropic contributions and her community leadership were an integral part of Charlotte’s growth. Although she will be missed, her contributions with endure.”

Organized by Dr. Robert Lindsey, JCSU Professor of Health and Human Performance, the event provided on site health screenings, wellness education, and career recruitment as a one-stop-shop extravaganza that drew students, faculty, staff, alumni, neighbors and droves of community partners.
