JCSU named Top 30 HBCU and a top performer on social mobility

The university shows significant improvement in the HBCU category, skyrockets 165 spots in the social mobility category

Charlotte, N.C./Sept. 15, 2021 – Johnson C. Smith University's 2022 U.S. News and World Report rankings show proof of the positive momentum happening on campus. In the Historically Black Colleges and Universities category, JCSU climbed six spots to #30 (tie). It was good enough for JCSU to remain the highest ranked private HBCU in North Carolina. For the top performers in social mobility at national liberal arts institutions, JCSU catapulted from #178 to #13.

In a statement, President Clarence D. Armbrister expressed pride in JCSU's trajectory, while acknowledging that there is still work to be done:

Our U.S. News and World Report rankings share a small glimpse of the commitment from students, faculty, staff, alumni, trustees and supporters. They all play an integral role in our success. I applaud them and I'm grateful for their dedication. Our new strategic plan focuses on areas of improvement to ensure we follow our blueprint to become the gold standard for HBCUs.

To make such a leap in social mobility among national liberal arts institutions is satisfying. As an institution, JCSU is actively involved in efforts to improve Charlotte's underwhelming statistics regarding upward mobility. Our ranking proves JCSU is a significant national player and should be at the table whenever leaders are addressing these issues locally. The business community, particularly here in Charlotte, has been supportive of JCSU. I encourage more local and national corporations, foundations and philanthropists to support JCSU as we continue to transform the lives of highly talented and motivated students from various backgrounds.
