Dr. Douglas Cooper is an Associate Professor of Psychology and serves as Program Coordinator and Teacher-Advisor for the Psychology Program. He joined JCSU in 2011 and holds a Ph.D. in Social Psychology with a minor in Quantitative Methods.
Dr. Cooper’s professional interests reflect his commitment to both social psychological research and undergraduate education. His research interests include identity, rejection, and terror management theory, as well as the scholarship of teaching and learning. More recently, his interests have focused on teaching and learning, undergraduate research experiences, and the use of artificial intelligence in the classroom, including how emerging technologies can be incorporated into teaching and learning in thoughtful and responsible ways.
In his teaching, Dr. Cooper emphasizes helping students develop the skills to critically evaluate psychological research, work with quantitative data, and design and conduct their own research. He particularly enjoys mentoring students as they move from learning about research methods to developing independent undergraduate research projects.
Outside the university, Dr. Cooper enjoys spending time with his partner and adult child, being outdoors, cooking, reading, and learning the piano.
