Personal statement

 

A personal statement for the committee to gain greater insight as to who you are, why you have chosen to pursue a graduate social work education, and your readiness for graduate work. The personal statement should be in your own words and should be 3 to 5 double-spaced type pages in length.

  1. Describe your interest in social work Please discuss any volunteer or paid experiences in human services community work, and/or other experiences that contributed to your decision to pursue social work as a profession.
  2. Address how you believe you will balance the rigorous demands of coursework and field education (in the latter case, especially in terms of being able to manage your schedule & resources) to meet the demanding requirements and attend to self-care.
  3. What personal characteristics, unique skills, or life experiences do you bring to the program? Please include any leadership skills and characteristics you believe you possess.
  4. Please describe your experience and/or interest in working with diverse populations, commitment to social and economic justice, and other interests congruent with social work. Please include any populations you perceive will pose challenges for you as an emerging social worker. Specifically address diversity values defined in terms of race, age, gender, sexual orientation, religion, socio-economic status. Please include meaningful experiences in groups, communities and organizations such as issues of classism, sexism, homophobia, racism, poverty and other forms of oppression.
  5. Discuss contributions to the profession and society you expect to make as a social worker, especially in terms of our program's mission emphasizing culturally competent practice with diverse populations.

Three recommendations (at least 1-2 persons that can speak to your academics, others can be colleague, supervisor, etc.) Official transcripts from all colleges/universities attended. If you completed your undergraduate degree 5 or more years ago, then you may use character references (i.e., colleagues, supervisors, etc.) for all three references. However, we strongly recommend that you attempt to secure two academic references if possible.
