Students study abroad in Israel

This year JCSU students had an opportunity to experience the sights, sounds and culture of Israel. Traveling with chaperones Dr. Cindy Kistenberg and Kendal Mobley, the group saw Caesarea, a Roman city built by King Herod the Great in honor of Augustus, enjoyed rafting on the River Jordan, and visits to Nazareth, Capernaum, and traditional sites of the Sermon on the Mount and the feeding of the 5,000.

Johnson C. Smith University nabs two nominations for the 2018-19 HBCU Digest Awards

Congratulations are in order for Johnson C. Smith University associate professor of political science, Dr. Terza Lima-Neves and the student-run sustainability village. Lima-Neves, nominated for HBCU Female Faculty of the Year Award, announced her nomination on Twitter, saying “Yo! I just found out that I’m a finalist for HBCU Female Faculty of the Year Award by HBCU Digest. I can’t believe it. Thank you.”

Federal grant funds JCSU Transportation Institute for high school students

Johnson C. Smith University’s Smith Tech Innovation Center was awarded a contract to host the Summer Transportation Institute. The North Carolina Department of Transportation manages the institute, funded by the U.S. Department of Transportation - Federal Highway Administration.

JCSU collaborates with CMS for Impact Extravaganza

Johnson C. Smith University Associate professor of mathematics, Dr. Dawn McNair, in collaboration with Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools held their annual impact day. This year the focus was on mathematics and technology. The 18-month joint effort, funded by the Belk Foundation, provides teachers at select CMS schools the tools to build 3D printers that catapult teaching methods in the classroom. Teachers and students gathered at the university’s New Science Center to display their 3D printers and the items they created.

JCSU first HBCU to offer Lactation Consultant Training Program addressing Black breastfeeding crisis

North Carolina has one of the highest infant mortality rates in the country, with Black infants dying at a rate more than twice that of Non-Hispanic White infants. While it is proven that breastfeeding is protective against infant mortality, the Black population has the lowest rates of breastfeeding duration. According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, only 62% of Black infants born in the US in 2010 initiated breastfeeding, compared to 79% of White infants. After six months, only 36% continued to breastfeed, compared to 52% of White infants.

Education, Industry and Congressional Leaders Convene for HBCU STEAM DAY

Johnson C. Smith University joined the Bipartisan Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) Caucus and the Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics (STEAM) Caucus for the second annual HBCU STEAM Day of Action on Capitol Hill. This annual event brings together education and industry leaders and Members of Congress for a collective day of advocacy for our nation’s 102 HBCUs and their 300,000 students.

Kaleyah Braxton takes a shot at wildlife

Kaleyah Braxton ’21 spent Fall 2018 sharpening her photography skills as an intern in the Department of University Communications and Marketing, capturing images at sports, academic and social events. She took her craft to another level with a two-day wildlife and bird photography course limited to a dozen professional nature photographers at the Carolina Raptor Center.

This is OUR Celebration – JCSU Celebrates National African American Read-In

Yancy Hall was transformed with student exhibits celebrating Black culture, history and pride as a part of the 29th annual National African American Read-In Celebration on Feb. 20. 

The national event was established in 1990 by the Black Caucus of the National Council of Teachers of English in an effort to make literacy an important part of Black History Month.
