Dance dreams take stage at Open Streets 704 Fest

The JCSU Repertory Dance Company performed Sunday, Sept. 30, 2018 at the Open Streets 704 Festival. Powered by Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Carolina, the event opened a length of city streets for the purpose of encouraging more biking, walking, and exploring with neighbors. The community-building event attracted thousands to Charlotte’s West Side, near JCSU’s campus.

JCSU alliance completes minority STEM pipeline in Charlotte

For six weeks this summer, 80 adolescents and teens came to JCSU’s STEM Innovation Initiative program to build skills. The students came through IBTechReady and ENTICE programs at Ranson IB Middle School and West Charlotte High School, which is certified for the IB world diploma program. JCSU stepped in as the logical next step in the STEM education of these high-performing students of color.

Blue Cross NC Invests $325,000 in Expansion of Johnson C. Smith University’s Sustainability Village

Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina (Blue Cross NC) announced today an investment of $325,000 toward the Johnson C. Smith University (JCSU) Sustainability Village expansion. The investment will fund the construction of three new buildings and support year-round harvests to benefit West Charlotte communities.

Cheryl Curtis appointed to academic publications board

Dr. Cheryl Curtis was appointed publications board coordinator for the American College Personnel Association (ACPA) on June 1, 2018. Over the course of the three-year appointment, she will serve as the liaison between the editors of all 10 ACPA publications, amplifying the published perspectives of diverse student, faculty and staff researchers.

JCSU lands major grants for student research

Johnson C. Smith University was recently awarded several new grant awards, which will be used to increase the rigor of student research projects. The National Science Foundation awarded JCSU $114,279 for support of a project entitled “NSF REU Site: Examining the Intersection of Food, Housing, and Healthcare.”

Medical intern sees breakthrough in the lab

Taneva Bush ’19 is steadily progressing on her goals to become a doctor. She took an intensive 10-week internship in Summer 2018, as part of the Undergraduate Research Fellowship program at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center in Ohio. It was the second time around for Bush, who’d done an initial fellowship last year in the Department of Anesthesia at the hospital’s Research Clinic.  She was of such benefit, the hospital invited her to return.
