Stephen Sherrill’s family has a rich history at Johnson C. Smith University.

His father, Mark Sherrill ’92, played basketball at JCSU, and his mother Tasha Strader-Sherrill ’92 also attended JCSU, so he found himself on campus a lot during his youth. There was no question where he was hoping to continue his education.

“I just thought it was only right I attended this illustrious University,” he said.

Sherrill began pursuing his degree in Computer Science and Information Systems while playing on the men’s basketball team as a small forward.

Sherrill said his favorite memories were both on the court and off.

“My favorite memories were playing my last year of basketball and getting to play for my father while he was an assistant coach, winning a Southern Division title my freshman year and getting to play for the legendary Coach Stephen Joyner who I am named after,” he said.

He also said being initiated into the Rho chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., played a huge part in his collegiate journey.

“Meeting a random group of men that I’ve never talked to before and then all of us becoming brothers for a lifetime is something you can’t beat,” he said. “That I will cherish for the rest of my life.”

Johnson C. Smith University allowed Sherrill to pursue his passion for basketball while setting a career focus in the field of Computer Science and Information Systems.

After he crosses the stage in May, he will begin working in the Global Technology office at Bank of America. But he plans to continue his passion for basketball by pursing a referee career with dreams of becoming an NBA referee one day.

“What I’ve learned at JCSU is that things might not always go your way,” he said. “There are going to be trials and tribulations – that’s a part of life. But it’s also about how you put your mind to it and handle those situations that will help you stay focused. So, handle your business, be a leader and treat all with the same respect. You never know what they can do for you!”
