Welcome!

Welcome to the Biddle Institute at Johnson C. Smith University where we believe in developing the whole student and nurturing the process of student success. Our innovative program is designed to help participants identify, develop and apply noncognitive strengths, learning in and outside of the classroom. 

About NonCognitive Strengths

Our program exceeds traditional academics by placing focus on emphasizing the development of these six noncognitive strengths:

  • Academic Motivation - Desire to learn
  • Self-Efficacy - One’s belief in their ability to accomplish something
  • Resilience - One’s response to adversity; bounce back
  • Leadership - Exercise influence; role model
  • Service Engagement - A civil act for others
  • Educational Commitment - Determination to Learn

Biddle Institute Goals

• Biddle Institute scholars will be able to identify, develop and apply their noncognitive strengths in and outside of the classroom.

• Biddle Institute scholars will successfully transition out of the Biddle Institute by attaining the required 2.0 cumulative GPA after freshman year.

• Biddle Institute scholars will be prepared to make an informed decision of declaring their major before beginning their sophomore year.  

Biddle Institute Admissions

Biddle Institute scholars are determined by high school performance and noncognitive strengths assessment scores.

Sit Lux Scholars Cohort:

  • High school GPA - Below a 2.29
  • Noncognitive strengths assessment scores are determined during the completion of the admissions application
  • *Required to attend Bridge to Biddle Summer program.
  • Must complete two FAFSAs for current and past year prior to June 1.
  • Follow nine enrollment steps for JCSU financial clearance (my.jcsu.edu)

Biddle Freshman Cohort:

  • High school GPA - 2.3 - 2.49
  • Noncognitive strengths assessment scores determined during the completion of the admissions application
  • Bridge to Biddle Summer Program (pending availability)
  • Follow nine enrollment steps for JCSU financial clearance (my.jcsu.edu)

Biddle Institute Programs

Strengths Advising

Students are required to meet with their assigned strengths advisor for a minimum of once a month for check in and student status.

Topics of discussion, but not limited to:

  • Major exploration
  • Noncognitive strengths development
  • Student success
  • Career planning
  • Goals and mission planning
  • Student engagement

Engagement Calendar

Students are provided opportunities to practice their noncognitive strengths through co-curricular activities and student engagement. The following examples are subject to change:

  • Strengths training
  • Internships
  • Student employment
  • Off-campus excursions
  • Student workshops
  • Volunteering
  • Community service

Noncognitive Strengths Development Center

A learning environment that focuses on student needs as it relates to academics, personal and professional growth, communication and skill development.

Services provided, but not limited to:

  • Academic excellence hour
  • Professional and peer tutoring
  • Supplemental instruction
  • Faculty/staff interaction
  • Learning hub

Noncognitive Strengths Course

Students will participate in a one-credit course at identifying, developing and practicing noncogntive strengths. Students will leave this course with a clear understanding of what they do well and how these skills progress them as a student, person and professional.

Biddle Institute Agreement

  • Students are not allowed to declare a major until second semester and earning a 2.5 gpa. Once this is occurs students may declare their intended major and also be scheduled into courses related to major.
  • Students are required to meet with strengths advisor monthly or as directed by advisor.
  • Students are required to meet with Student Success Coach (SSC) three times per semester or as directed by SSC.
  • Students will actively participate in activities designed and implemented by Biddle Institute.
  • Students will ask for assistance when needed, as well as, believe they are able to accomplish whatever they put their minds to
  • Students will transition out of Biddle Institute after two semesters and obtaining a GPA of 2.0 or above.
