Taneva Bush ’19 is steadily progressing on her goals to become a doctor. She took an intensive 10-week internship in Summer 2018, as part of the Undergraduate Research Fellowship program at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center in Ohio. It was the second time around for Bush, who’d done an initial fellowship last year in the Department of Anesthesia at the hospital’s Research Clinic.  She was of such benefit, the hospital invited her to return.

Jameia Booker ’19, a criminology major with a pre-law minor, was chosen to participate in the HBCU Bi-Partisan Congressional Internship program June 4-July 27, 2018.

The Rosa Parks Farmers Market kicked off its third market season June 2018, returning with more food options, a bigger location and better hours! Every Tuesday from June through September, community members can visit the market at its new home at 1600 W. Trade St. in Charlotte, North Carolina.

JCSU’s Brianna Glymph ’19 and Braxton Gambrell ’20 were among the 50 students from across North Carolina chosen to participate in the N.C. Governor’s Historically Black Colleges and Universities Internship Program.

Members of the JCSU Concert Choir performed in Opera Carolina’s production of the rhythm and blues opera “I DREAM” by Douglas Tappin in Charlotte’s Knight Theater May 18-25, 2018.

Johnson C. Smith University sophomore Kioda Wilson of Axton, Va., received a $2,000 MetLife STEM Scholarship from the Independent College Fund of North Carolina (ICFNC). Wilson is majoring in international business administration.

Mary Holiman ‘19 was selected to be one of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.’s Spring 2018 Leadership fellows. She’s the first AKA from the region to participate in the competitive annual program, which since 1979 has chosen 30 young women nationwide in which to invest resources, education and mentorship to prepare them to be leaders.

Four Golden Bulls traveled to Georgia State University March 8-9, 2018, to attend the Center for International Business Education & Research (CIBER) International Case Competition, and brought home first and second place prizes. It was JCSU’s third year of competing in the event.

Johnson C. Smith University’s Latinx student organization LAFA, together with JCSU's Metropolitan College and the Committee of National Holidays and Traditions in Charlotte, sponsored the event “Afro-Latinos in Charlotte.” An insightful panel of Afro-Latino leaders in business, education and the art world spoke about cultural matters and their impacts on the city. The celebration was in commemoration of Black History Month, and included a screening of the short film “Afrolatinos” in addition to a panel discussion about Afro-Latino experiences in the South.

Mariah Collins, Miss Johnson C. Smith University 2017-2018, will appear as one of the top ten Historically Black College and University’s (HBCU) campus queens in Ebony Magazine.

The Louisville, Ken. native competed against 62 young women representing HBCU’s across the nation. Mariah took third place in the online voting competition.
