Awa Sore ’21, a double major in biology and chemistry, is getting a head start at her career as a doctor. She spent summer 2020 completing a virtual research internship with Davidson College.

A number of students and faculty who participated in the annual Mid-South Sociological Association conference (MSSA) October 14-17, 2020, are proving how Johnson C. Smith University Holds High the Gold and Blue. 

Johnson C. Smith University student Dana Battle ‘21 is getting a head start at saving lives. The senior who aspires to become a doctor, worked on COVID-19 clinical research during her summer internship with Davidson College. 

The pandemic has disproportionately impacted people of color in more ways than one. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, Black and Latino Americans have contracted, been hospitalized and died from the virus at a significantly higher rate than Caucasian Americans. Compounded with the challenges of being a college student, navigating through these times can be a burden. JCSU faculty and staff continue to assist with students’ overall health in unique ways.

Tymier Farrar ‘21 is just two semesters away from graduation, but the business administration major is already getting professional experience for his future career as an entrepreneur. This summer he interned in the business law and customer relation sectors with Brighthouse Financial.

Deben Peterson ‘21 is fresh off his internship with Lockheed Martin Space. The rising senior, who received the highest clearance with the company, spent part of his summer working with the company’s satellite simulation to help debug flight software before launch.

Crystal Howard ‘21 just began her senior year, but the computer science information systems major has already secured a job with Bank of America. The news comes following her summer 2020, 10-week internship with the company.

Jordan Green ’21 spent the summer as a Security Engineer Intern within the Enterprise Security department at Electronic Arts (EA). The senior, who majors in Computer Science Information Systems with a minor in Cybersecurity, performed so well she’s continued a part-time role with the gaming company.

The pandemic didn’t stop Alexys Gabriel ‘22 from gaining experience needed to fulfill her dreams of a job on Capitol Hill. The junior, who majors in business administration with a concentration in marketing, spent the summer as a congressional intern in the House of Representatives, dividing her time between Representative Alma Adams [NC-D-12] and Representative Mark Walker [NC-R-06].
