Dr. Cheryl Butler-Brayboy is the Director of University Communications and Marketing for Johnson C. Smith University. Brayboy first joined the faculty at Johnson C. Smith University in 2008, originally as interim Director of the Writing Center and Assistant Professor of English. Later, she served as Associate Professor of English and Chair of the Department of Languages and Literature (2017-2019). During this time, Dr. Brayboy was honored with the CATO Par Excellence Teaching Award, the College of Arts & Letters Leadership Award, and the GSPAR Rising Star Award. Dr. Brayboy served as a campus leader on the JCSU Marketing Pro Team and the Blue Ocean Strategy Marketing Committee.  

 In addition, Dr. Brayboy also is known for her experiences as a journalist. She ushered in mornings and afternoons as host/reporter for WBTV’s QC Morning and QC@3 (2019-2023); she also served as host of sponsored content. Over the years, Dr. Brayboy has worked across the country—from Washington, D.C. to Columbus, Georgia—for CBS, NBC, and Fox stations. She launched her career in the television world as a promotions intern for The Jerry Springer Show and Face to Face: The Vernon Jarrett Show (ABC Chicago). Her academic, marketing, and journalism experiences merge in a book she wrote titled, Art of the Black Essay (Routledge Press). Dr. Brayboy has conducted independent research in Jamaica, the Dominican Republic, Mexico, and England. She has a Ph.D. in English from the University of Pennsylvania and a B.A. in English and Spanish from Spelman College.
