Graduate Admission

Johnson C. Smith University’s Master of Social Work (MSW) Program offers two pathways in which you can apply for entrance into the graduate program: Advanced Standing (1-year program) or MSW (2-year program).

Students who wish to attend Johnson C. Smith University’s Master of Social Work Program must first submit a completed MSW Application packet. To be considered please review the steps below.

Please note the MSW program DOES NOT require the GRE nor grant social work course credit for life experience or previous work experience.

Step 1: Complete MSW application.

First, make sure to start the application process by filling out the application.

Step 2: Request transcripts

Request official transcripts from all colleges/universities attended.

Please send them to:

Attn: Dr. Melvin Herring, MSW Graduate Program
100 Beatties Ford Road
Charlotte, North Carolina 28216

Step 3: Complete reference form

Complete Applicant Reference Form. There are 3 recommendations required with the MSW application. The MSW Committee recommends that the applicant has at least 1-2 persons that can speak to the applicant’s academics (i.e., professors). The other can be a colleague, supervisor, etc. If you completed your undergraduate degree 5 or more years ago, then you may use character references (i.e., colleagues, supervisors, etc.) for all three references. However, we strongly recommend that you attempt to secure two academic references if possible.

Please advise your references that your information is keyed in at the top of the first page. Their signature is required on the last page.

Step 4: Application review

Please make sure that you include the following before you submit your fee for an application review:

MSW application for Admission
Personal statement
Resume

Step 5: Pay application fee

Pay the $40 application fee. If you pay online, please forward the confirmation email you receive to the Office of Admissions at admissions@jcsu.edu or you may pay in the Business Office on the 3rd floor in Biddle Hall on campus.

Masters of Social Work graduate applications will be reviewed three times during the academic year. This process is to encourage applicants to submit their completed packets (all required materials described above) as soon as possible for review. All completed application packets received by the specified review date will be reviewed and a decision likely rendered to the applicant by the end of the corresponding month of the review. Currently, applications are only being accepted for Fall and Summer admissions. We do not have a Spring admission.

Summer admission is for applicants seeking entry into the Advanced Standing program. Fall admission is for applicants seeking entry into the Two-Year program. Applicants are asked to adhere to the specific deadlines established by the MSW program:

Review deadline Expected decision
First application review: October 1 October 31
Second application review: February 1 February 28
Third application review: April 1 April 30

All materials submitted in support of an application for admission become the property of Johnson C. Smith University. Materials will not be returned or released to third parties. Any student admitted on false and/or incomplete information is subject to immediate dismissal or other disciplinary action.

The JCSU graduate Social Work Program is accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE). The Commission on Accreditation of the Council on Social Work Education approved reaffirmation for the JCSU MSW program in 2019.
