Interdisciplinary Studies

Flexible Study Opportunities

The actions of one person can have an amazing impact on society. However, today’s social issues are so complex, they require some pretty creative answers.

As an interdisciplinary studies major at JCSU, you won’t be confined to just one program of study. Our flexible program allows you to combine two or three majors to create a unique major that fits your career goals.

What will I study as an interdisciplinary studies major?

Your education as an interdisciplinary studies major begins by a problem or question that you want to answer. The disciplines that you combine for your degree in interdisciplinary studies will give you different points of view to analyze the problem and help you come up with an innovative solution.

Through close work with the advisors in your chosen programs, you’ll plan your academic goals around research topics that are interesting to you.

Where will I study interdisciplinary studies?

It all depends on what you want to learn. Our campus offers the latest technology in our smart classrooms, and we have a variety of high-tech labs to help you conduct cutting-edge research.

On- and off-campus, our facilities will provide the right environment for you to explore the variety of possibilities related to your focus of study.

What will I learn outside the interdisciplinary studies program?

JCSU is a private liberal arts university. What this means to you is that your education will broadly cover all areas of study. The diversity of your classes will help you look at “the big picture” in any career you choose.

  • Classes in computer science and communication arts will give you a definite advantage in the job market and workplace.
  • Taking several English and foreign language classes will help you interact with a global community that is getting smaller each day.
  • By taking math and science classes, you’ll have a better understanding of the world around you.
  • Health and physical education courses give you the knowledge to cope with everyday stress and lead a better, longer life.

Having a college education will give you the tools to succeed in life. Having a liberal arts education will give you the opportunity to take your success further.

The job market has changed drastically since your parents started their first job. Plus, employees today don’t stay with one company for 30 years and retire with a pension and a gold watch. Instead, today’s worker may change careers seven or eight times.

With a degree in interdisciplinary studies, you have the right mix of skills to adapt to change. The ability to communicate well, think critically and conduct research will make you the ideal candidate in the workforce.

We prepare you for success beyond the classroom.

By majoring in interdisciplinary studies, you take control of your education.

The first question you have to ask yourself is “What question do I want to answer?"

Whether it’s how different cultures adapt to natural disasters or how religion impacts parenting styles, what you learn at JCSU depends entirely on what you’re interested in.

Our interdisciplinary studies program teaches you how to think independently and creatively. You’ll enter the workforce being able to examine any problem from a variety of viewpoints.

Research opportunities you won’t find anywhere else.

Because you can customize your education to fit the topics that are important to you, there are no limits to what you can learn.

Our JCSU students have paired a variety of seemingly different courses to find solutions to today’s pressing issues.

    • One student combined community health courses with computer science. He built a bicycle that can be either stationary or mobile to increase good health in the African-American community.
    • Another student held a series of workshops on domestic violence among African-Americans after studying social work, psychology and women’s studies.
    • By combining sport management with communication art, another student explored how African-Americans consume media. He later presented his findings to other students at a Lyceum event.

Their research and community involvement help answer important social and health questions. Not only do these accomplishments give our students a great sense of pride, they also serve as foundations for future careers.

Personalized attention gives you the tools to succeed.

Because your education won’t follow a traditional curriculum, your professors will work closely with you to make sure you’re getting the most out of your studies.

All your JCSU professors are experts in their fields, and they’ll help you understand how different programs relate to each other to solve a pressing social problem.

Get involved in on-campus activities and organizations.

IDS majors have special opportunities to become engaged on and off campus. You’ll have the chance to take on a leadership role in student organizations like the:

      • Black Ink Monks poetry performance group
      • Silent Noise Entertainment audio-visual group
      • Student Government Association

Your path to a successful career begins the minute you step on campus.
