Be a rising Star

Some people were born to shine under the spotlight. If you consider yourself to be a rising star, or if you want to help others tap into their talent through engineering, music production or teaching, our music program may be the right fit for you.

As a music major at JCSU, you’ll have the opportunity to fine-tune your creativity and develop the skills to express yourself through sound.

What will I study as a music major?

If you decide a career in music is for you, our program will help you further develop your knowledge and talents.

Our program allows you to focus your study in one of three concentrations: music business and technology, sacred music or performance. No matter which path you choose, you’ll learn the basics of music theory, as well as the technology and equipment you’ll use in your future career.

You’ll also take a variety of hands-on courses. Working with instruments and music production software, we’ll help you develop your own style so you stand out in the music industry.

    Where will I study music?

Do you know what a whisper room is? In your first year in our program, you’ll become familiar with using these sound-proof booths for recording artists or instruments.

As a music major at JCSU, your classroom takes many forms — some traditional and some not so traditional. You’ll also have access to recording studios, whisper rooms and Mac computer stations that feature the latest audio production and music software.

Did you know that JCSU was one of the first universities in the country to use Reason music production software in the classroom? Reason operates like a virtual recording studio, allowing you to mix your unique sound using synthesizers, mixes and sequencers. This computer interface simulates an entire room full of very expensive equipment.

What will I learn outside the music program?

JCSU is a private liberal arts university. What this means to you is that your education will broadly cover all areas of study. The diversity of your classes will help you look at “the big picture” in any career you choose.

      • Classes in computer science and communication arts will give you a definite advantage in the job market and workplace.
      • Taking several English and foreign language classes will help you interact with a global community that is getting smaller each day.
      • By taking math and science classes, you’ll have a better understanding of the world around you.
      • Health and physical education courses give you the knowledge to cope with everyday stress and lead a better, longer life.

Having a college education will give you the tools to succeed in life. Having a liberal arts education will give you the opportunity to take your success further.

The music business has grown by leaps and bounds since the early days of vinyl records. Digital tracks, Auto-Tune and online sales have transformed the industry. Employers today need people who are creative thinkers and on the cutting-edge of music technology.

Your education at JCSU will prepare you to begin your career or continue your education with graduate study.

        Internships give you relevant experience.

Our students have had the opportunity to intern with our music professors, as well as the well-known music production company, The Neptunes, led by Pharrell Williams and Chad Hugo.

Your internship will give you valuable experience in studio setup, merchandising and management. The chance to work with leaders in the industry will also help you launch a career that is both creative and rewarding.

Personalized attention gives you the tools to succeed.

We understand that not all students in our program have the same background in music. While some might have been performing for years, others come in with little more than a passion for music.

That’s why we work closely with all students in our program to help them further develop the skills they’ll need to achieve their best.

Get involved in on-campus activities and organizations.

Music plays an important role on JCSU’s campus. As a music major, you’ll have the opportunity to involve yourself in every aspect of music, both in and out of the classroom.
