Zariah Taylor Leads Community Sessions During Summer Internship with Mecklenburg County Public Health

Zariah Taylor ’22 is spending summer 2021 as an intern with Mecklenburg County Public Health in the Office of Community Engagement. The public health major hopes this experience during her first internship helps her decide exactly what she wants to do within her career post-graduation.

“Right now, I lead on our Monday night EMPOWER group sessions, where I am actively involved in outside community activities such as webinars and community service meetings with surrounding churches in our community,” Taylor said when explaining the current duties of her internship.

Dr. Karen Butler, professor of Health Education, presented Taylor with the opportunity to work with Mecklenburg County Public Health.

“After telling her what I was interested in, she guided me to Gwendolyn Devins, Mecklenburg County Health program coordinator and supervisor,” Taylor added. “I am grateful to the faculty at JCSU, especially Dr. Butler, who are constantly helping us in and out of the classrooms.

Taylor hopes to gain as much experience as possible this summer and looks forward to the additional responsibilities she will be given in this role.

“My internship doesn’t end until September, but I have already learned so much and I’m excited to learn more.”

She hopes other students follow in her footsteps and gain the necessary experience outside the classroom through an internship.
