Shakoya Brown
STUDENT SUMMER SPOTLIGHT

Shakoya Brown

Student Government Association President, Shakoya Brown ‘20, spent part of her summer in Fort Lauderdale, Florida learning about politics with Organizing Corps 2020, a program powered by the Democratic National Committee. The program brought together 300 college students from across the country in seven battle ground states.

Brown chose to intern in her hometown because she wanted to make an impact in the community in which she grew up.

“My cohort and I planned and programmed Days of Action, a panel on the Black Vote, and an immigration rally to engage and inform the community of issues directly affecting the population in Broward County,” Brown explained.

Brown, who has completed four internships in the past 3 years, encourages other Smithites to follow her example.

“They have helped me figure out what kind of work I enjoy and what I don’t find interesting. I believe that a good internship ultimately increases you network, net worth, and skill set.”
