JCSU is utilizing its intellectual and human capital to raise awareness of the importance of sustainability and provide innovative opportunities for small business development throughout the Northwest/Beatties Ford Road Corridor.

During the 2010-2011 academic year, JCSU students partnered with graduate interns from Duke University’s Nicholas School of the Environment to develop content for a “How to Green Your Business” workshop, geared toward participants in the Women Entrepreneurship Program. Additionally, the Center for Applied Leadership and Community Development partnered with the Michael Scott Mater Foundation, which works to build sustainable communities, to provide an expanded workshop for participants in the 2011 WEP program.

Because the green industry is a growing employment sector, these workshops were designed to improve the awareness and ability of community residents to employ simple conservation techniques in their daily living, in addition to aiding new small business owners in developing or greening their enterprises.
