Smith Institute for Applied Research
Smith Institute concentrates on specific research questions that address some of the most pressing issues of our day. The Institute works to secure research funding, and to help students master academic excellence required for success in academia and the workplace.
Solving Real-World Problems
JCSU’s emphasis on applied research attracts leaders from the surrounding metropolitan and statewide arenas, and national thought leaders who understand that solving problems in today’s world requires transdisciplinary knowledge.
Transdisciplinary means knowledge and experiences that cross and integrate various disciplines.
Working with Partners
Smith Institute promotes collaboration with outside partners including the Urban Land Institute and Santa Fe Institute of New Mexico. It also provides pilot-study funding, which faculty members are often able to leverage into grant support from key federal agencies, such as the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and the U.S. Department of Education. These pilot grants also support paid student-level internships.
Within the institute are four Centers of Excellence:
- The Center of Excellence in Diversity, Workforce and Small Business Development
- The Center of Excellence in Global Education
- The Center of Excellence in Homeland Security – STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics)
- The Center of Excellence in Minority Health and Family Wellness
