The Northwest Corridor CDC was awarded a $25,000.00 grant from the Wachovia Foundation towards it
housing program.

nw.bmp (311310 bytes)In late 1985, a group of neighborhood business and civic leaders met to chart a strategy for improving economic development initiatives and housing opportunities for the "Northwest Corridor". Two outgrowths of this effort, termed "Project Catalyst", were the West Charlotte Business Incubator (1990) and the Northwest Corridor Community Development Corporation (1991).

Johnson C. Smith University continues to nurture and help maintain the Northwest Corridor CDC, but funding and technical support from Seedco has been a key to the organization’s growth and activities. Seedco is a New York-based private foundation dedicated to aiding economic development activities in areas surrounding the nation’s historically black colleges and universities. Hope and pride is returning to the Northwest Corridor, the first steps in re-creating prosperous neighborhoods. The mission of the Northwest Corridor CDC is to:

  • Spur community economic development;
  • Address community housing needs;
  • Address community human services needs;
  • Create a positive image while nurturing community pride; and
  • Work with JCSU to ensure that growth of the University and the community are complimentary.

Twelve organized and registered neighborhoods within the Corridor (Biddleville-Five Points, Dalebrook, Lincoln Heights, McCrorey Heights, Oaklawn Park, Oaklawn Terrace, Seversville, Smallwood, Taylor Avenue, University Park, Washington Heights, and Wesley Heights) are represented on the Board of Directors by six neighborhood presidents.  The remainder of the 16-member Board represent Johnson C. Smith University, the Chamber of Commerce, Mechanics & Farmers Bank, Bank of America, Wachovia, the City of Charlotte government and the local merchant’s association.
