(WASHINGTON, DC)----The
United Negro College Fund recently named Johnson C. Smith
President Dorothy Cowser Yancy, Ph. D. as Chair of its Member
College Presidents.
"The entire UNCF family is pleased to have Dr. Yancy serve as
Chair of UNCF member college presidents," said Former UNCF
President William H. Gray, III. "Dorothy is a distinguished
academician, president and leader, and I am confident that her
many talents will help UNCF fulfill its mission of guaranteeing
educational opportunities to every deserving student."
In her new role as chair of UNCF member college presidents,
Yancy will preside over the meetings of the other 38 member
presidents and work to ensure that the needs and issues of the
member institutions are addressed. She also is a member of
UNCF’s Corporate Board, Executive Committee and Nominating
Committee.
“This new two-year appointment is important because it includes
all 39 UNCF supported institutions serving thousands of
students,” Yancy said.
A native of Alabama, Yancy has been president of Johnson C.
Smith University since October 1994. During her tenure, the
university’s endowment has more than doubled, increasing from
$14 million to $38 million.
Applications have increased by 300 percent and numerous
construction projects, aimed at improving the learning
environment for students and faculty, have been completed
including a state of the art library, academic complex and
technology center.
She also paved the way in 2000 for JCSU to become the first
historically black college or university to issue laptops to all
of its students.
Founded in 1944, the United Negro College Fund is the nation's
oldest and most successful minority higher education assistance
