JCSU Vice-President for Student Affairs Resigns

AwardFebruary 11, 2008 – Johnson C. Smith University Vice-President for Student Affairs Jeffrey Smith has resigned his position effective June 2008. Smith is leaving his position to work as the new Vice-President for Student Affairs at Bethune-Cookman University in Daytona, Fla. The university has an enrollment of 3,400 students.

Smith, 38, has worked at the university in various other positions since January of 1999. He was first hired as the Assistant Director of Admissions and later that year was appointed Director of Admissions. He also was appointed in 2002 as the Director of Religious Life. In 2004, he was promoted to Interim Assistant Vice-President for Student Affairs and the chief student affairs officer, and was later named Vice-President for Student Affairs in 2006.

“These past nine years have been absolutely phenomenal,” Smith said.  “Working for a nationwide leader such as Dr. Yancy has not only propelled me to new opportunities, but she has taught me valuable insight in leadership, economics, planning, management, and operational equity.  Of course I will miss my forever loved Alma Mater, but JCSU lives in my heart, mind, and soul.  Forever, will I be true, to dear old JCSU.”

As JCSU’s Vice-President for Student Affairs, Smith was responsible for overseeing the Division of Student Affairs which is comprised of Career Planning and Placement, Counseling and Testing, Health Services, Residence Life, Student Activities/Student Union, Campus Ministries, Judicial Programs, Fraternities and Sororities. He also worked closely with campus police.

Smith has a B.A. in English from Johnson C. Smith University. Smith also received a Masters in Divinity from Johnson C. Smith University Theological Seminary. He received his Doctorate in Ministry degree from Gardner Webb University.

In 1932, JCSU became the first black college
in NC to receive regional accreditation.
