 (CHARLOTTE, NC)----Two
Johnson C. Smith alumni have made school history by becoming the
first graduates to receive doctorate degrees in Computer Science
and Engineering.
Dr. Alicia Nicki Washington and Dr.
Brian A. Jackson are the first JCSU computer science graduates
to receive their doctorate degrees. Both received them this
spring.
Washington
received her doctorate degree from N.C. State University in May.
She is a native of Durham, N.C. and received
her bachelor’s degree in computer science from JCSU in 2000. She
received her Master of Science in Computer Science from N.C.
State University in 2002. She is also a 2000 David and Lucille
Packard Fellow and a 2003 NASA Harriet G. Jenkins Pre-doctoral
Fellow.
Dr. Brian
Jackson finished his studies at JCSU in 1996. While at JCSU, he
was the first student to successfully complete a dual degree
program with the University of North Carolina Charlotte. He
received a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Mathematics from JCSU
and a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from
UNCC.
The Brooklyn,
N.Y resident then received his master’s of science degree in
Electrical Engineering from Virginia Tech in the Fall 1999. He
received his doctorate degree in Computer Engineering also from
Virginia Tech just last month. Jackson is now working with
Lucent Technologies.
