| (ATLANTA,
GA June 16, 2004)----The Kresge Foundation recently honored
longtime Johnson C. Smith University Trustee Judge Horace A.
Davenport for his $110,575 annuity gift which will
benefit the university.
More than 200 staff and leaders from
Historically Black Colleges across the nation convened on May
25 inside the Coca-Cola Company Auditorium to pay tribute to
Davenport and 28 other major gift donors. Collectively,
the group donated $11.7 million to 28 Historically Black
Colleges of which they have made special connections.
“It was so nice to see so many people
giving back,” Davenport said immediately after the elegant
ceremony. “It doesn’t mater how
much you give back, just as long as you give something,”
Davenport said.
Kresge honored Davenport with a special
black and gold stole recognizing his annuity donation to the
university made last October.
Davenport is a graduate of Howard
University. He earned a master’s degree in economics from
the Wharton School of Business and an L.L.B from the
University of Pennsylvania. Davenport made history when he
became the first African American appointed to the bench in
Montgomery County, Pa.
He was a JCSU Board of Trustee member
for 20 years. In 1979, the university awarded him with an
honorary Doctor of Laws in 1979.
The Kresge Foundation is an independent
private foundation which seeks through grant programs to
strengthen the capacity of charitable organizations to provide
effective programs.
