(CHARLOTTE,
NC)--The Cannon
Foundation, Inc. has awarded Johnson C. Smith University $50,000
to repair one of the school’s oldest residence halls – Berry
Hall.
Berry Hall was constructed in 1924 and currently houses 52 male
students. The 9,054 foot dormitory stands on the northern end of
campus and has three stories. Money received from the Cannon
Foundation will help to repair considerable structural and
extensive plumbing, electrical and other mechanical repairs.
“The
university is very appreciative of this grant,” said JCSU
President, Dr. Dorothy Cowser Yancy. “These funds will
definitely aid in repairing one of our oldest campus residence
facility.”
The Cannon
Foundation began in 1943 with giving focused on communities
where Cannon Mills plants were located. The foundation makes
grants for capital purposes for such things as new construction
and renovations.
Founded in
1867 as Biddle Memorial Institute, the university enrolls
approximately 1,500 students and confers bachelor’s degrees to
hundreds of students each year in 32 different majors. |
