(CHARLOTTE, NC)----Normally
when you see Johnson C. Smith University student technology
assistants, they are off and running with a screwdriver in hand
rushing to the next call. Aside from their daily duties of
maintaining computers campus-wide, STA’s now have another reason
to be proud.
JCSU students Marqeaux Marshall, La’tara White, DeCedric Boler,
Demond Raybon, Leah McPhearson, Stephanie Jones, Bobby Bienaimee,
and Monique Commons recently built new computers from raw
materials in just five days. The newly built computers will
replace old ones now being used on the university’s help desk
center.
Each computer has a 2.4 Pentium processor and 512 megabytes of
RAM. “This was a good opportunity to add a new and exciting
challenge for the students,” said Professional Technician and
JCSU graduate Toneisha Sims.
“What I’ve learned in the classroom cannot compare to what I’ve
learned here,” said Monique Thomas, a rising senior and Computer
Information Systems major. “This has been the best experience. I
encourage every JCSU student to try and get into the STA Plus
program.”
The JCSU Student Technology Assistants Plus Program began in
1998 with the employment of student assistants to run the
computer labs and the help desk center.
During their latest project, students worked an hour daily for a
week to complete their assignment. Some had reservations before
starting their project. “My major is Political Science, and I
knew nothing about computers, not even how to turn one on,” said
Junior La’Tara White. “I was so afraid of destroying the
motherboard.”
Staff who worked with the students called the project a success.
Congratulations to all the STA’s and staff who helped them with
the project. Faculty and staff are welcome to drop by the Perry
Science Building to view these state of the art computers. |
