7:30 p.m. Bruce A. Thompson is Director of Choral
Activities at Johnson C. Smith University. He holds a bachelors in
music Education from Stillman College and a masters of music
education from Western Illinois University. Additionally he has
studied voice with Dr. Donald Gray at the University of South
Carolina, Fran Shafter of Charlotte, North Carolina, and Grace
Bumbry in Salzburg, Austria.
Thompson is Minister of Music at Mt. Carmel Baptist Church in
Charlotte, NC. He has written many Negro Spirituals, gospels, and
anthems. Hs is a member of the National Association of Negro
Musicians, Phi Beta Lambda Business Association, North Carolina
Choral Directors Association, Music Educators National Conference,
Music Theory Southeast, and has been listed several times in
Outstanding Young Men of America.
Thompson is a bass-baritone soloist and performs often. He was a
“Celebration” Residence Artist for Opera Carolina, in Charlotte,
North Carolina. He has served on the Choral Review Panel for the
North Carolina Arts and Science Council, the Board of Directors for
the Oratorio Singers of Charlotte, and the Board of Directors for
the Southeastern African-America Collegiate Choral Festival.
