Poet and Educator
Terrance
Hayes, a native of Columbia, South Carolina, earned a B.A. from
Coker College and an MFA from the University of Pittsburgh. He is
the author of Hip Logic (Penguin, 2002) and Muscular Music (1999).
His poems have appeared in The Beloit Poetry Journal, Chelsea,
Callaloo, Crab Orchard Review and in two anthologies: Giant Steps:
The New Generation of African American Writers (ed. Kevin Young,
2000) and American Poetry: The Next Generation (eds. Gerald Costanzo
and Jim Daniels, 2000). He has received a Red Brick Review Award, a
Whiting Writers Award, and a Kate Tufts Discovery Award for his
poetry. He received his MFA from the University of Pittsburgh in
1997, and was an assistant professor of English at Xavier University
in New Orleans, Louisiana.
Hayes received a Whiting Writers Award
and the Kate Tufts Discovery Award for his first book of poems,
Muscular Music (Tia Chucha Press, 1999). Wind In a Box, his third
book of poems, is forthcoming from Penguin in 2005.
Hayes currently lives with his family in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
and teaches poetry courses at Carnegie Mellon University.
