William S. Robinson, M.A., is the founder of Black Men's Health
Initiative of Columbia, S.C. The Black Men’s Health Initiative was
chartered as a non-profit corporation in South Carolina in March
2005 as a vehicle to educate African Americans and men of the
African Diaspora about the risks and complications of chronic
disease. The Black Men’s Health Initiative (BMHI) is focused on
community prevention education and innovative interventions that
will have direct results in lowering risk and improving the health
status of black men. The BMHI couples lightheartedness and humor
with a direct and frank approach to engaging black men around
health.
Robinson is a native of Manhasset, N.Y. He relocated to South
Carolina in July 1988, and has lived in Columbia, Camden and Ladson.
Mr. Robinson earned a bachelor’s in political science from the State
University of New York (SUNY) at New Paltz. His master’s is in
African studies from SUNY at Albany, where he graduated magna cum
laude. Robinson has 30 years of administrative experience in a
variety of community-based, higher education and health-related
environments in New York and South Carolina.
He has served on both the SC Governor’s Task Forces for Substance
Abuse and Teenage Pregnancy Prevention.. He has served on the
Executive and Finance Committees and Board of Directors of the
Diabetes Initiative of South Carolina. He chaired for two years the
Initiative’s Task Force to Increase Minority CDEs (certified
diabetes educators). Robinson served as President of the S.C.
Coalition to Promote Physical Activity and as a member of the
committee that produced the first “Report on the Impact of Obesity”
in South Carolina. In 2005, Robinson chaired the S.C. Department of
Education’s Wellness Committee that reviewed and selected materials
from publishers that will be used in S.C. secondary schools.
