Lyceum Series
The
Lyceum Series of Johnson C. Smith University is one of the stellar
lecture and performance series in the Charlotte area, offering
programs of international stature. Although designed to enhance the
education experiences of students at the university, all programs
are free and open to the public. As a student from Seattle
said during the 1998-99 series, "Each time I go to a Lyceum program,
I discover a different side of myself." Indeed, the series serves to
enrich and challenge audiences with a wide range of ideas and
emotions.
Required for graduation, students must attend eight Lyceum events
during their tenure at the University, or an average of one event
per semester.

Lecture and Performance Etiquette
Lyceum lectures and performances are a vital part of JCSU
students’ education. The programs are designed to supplement
classroom learning by providing students an opportunity to
experience leading authorities in a wide range of
professions. The program is designed to expose
students to new experiences and to stretch their
understanding of the world they live in. Students are
invited to come with minds opened to learning something new.
- Try to arrive ten minutes before events begin in
order to be seated, and stay until they end. People
will not be admitted after the doors are closed.
- No beverages or food inside the Lyceum event venue.
- If you have an appointment that conflicts with the
time of the event, do not come for just part of the
program. Events typically begin at 7:30 PM and last
until around 8:45 PM.
- If you must leave (i.e. irrepressible coughing), do
so with the least amount of disturbance possible. When
you return sit in the rear of the hall.
- Cell phones and pagers should be turned off. If you
need the laptop for an assignment related to the event,
turn off the volume and reduce screen brightness. Do
not use the laptop for homework other purposes during
the Lyceum. Laptops should not be brought to performance
events such as concerts and plays.
- Appropriate apparel and decorum is expected.
Inappropriate parts of the body should not be exposed.
Apparel should be neat in accord with the seriousness of
the event. Headgear and dark glasses should be removed
before entering the event. Inappropriate apparel or
decorum may bar admission to the event.
- Without ID cards, students cannot receive Lyceum
credit. If your card is broken or lost, buy a
replacement.
