Medical Arts Exhibit)
The Fine Arts Examine the Medical Arts is an exhibit of paintings that helps us to see afresh the process of a modern medical education through the observations of fine art. Like Rembrandt’s depiction of “The Anatomy Lesson of Dr. Nicolaes Tulp” (1632) that provided insight into the medical process in the 17th century, or Thomas Eakins “The Gross Clinic” (1876) which gives us a look at the medical arts in the 19th century, this exhibit of art works created by six artists depicts the process of a modern medical education. The paintings allow those inside the medical world a fresh look at their own work, and those outside the medical world a look at the process and the workings of a medical school education.
In a series of commissioned works, each artist investigates a different aspect of the process that medical students’ experience as they work their way to becoming practitioners.
The completed collection is rendered in oils, acrylic, pastel, and graphite. It includes17 preliminary pieces, sketches, and washes that show the process in the development of the finished pieces.
In February of 2008, the exhibit opened at Rosalind Franklin University in North Chicago. A national tour in 2009 will show the paintings at a hand-full of universities and two non-academic sites around the country. Johnson C. Smith University is the only HBCU invited to take part in the national tour, thanks to the efforts of alumnus James Fullwood.

James E. Fullwood Jr. is a 2004 graduate of Johnson C. Smith University with a degree in biology and a minor in chemistry. After graduating from JCSU, he participated in a one-year post-baccalaureate program at Wake Forest University. At Wake Forest, he worked as a research student in the Brain Tumor for Excellence Center housed in the Baptist Hospital Cancer Center.
After becoming interested in podiatric medicine and surgery, Fullwood enrolled in the Dr. William M. Scholl College of Podiatric Medicine at Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science. Currently a third-year student, he has an anticipated graduation year of 2010.
David A. McKay is coordinator and Curator for the Museum of The Dr. William M. Scholl College of Podiatric Medicine at Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science. McKay has held this post for eight years. His first exhibit was the “Feet First Exhibit.” It is the function of the museum to act as a bridge to the community trough exhibitions and presentations to the public. The underlying mission of the museum is to mount exhibits that show the possibilities open to students in the world of medicine and science.
“The Fine Arts Examine the Medical Arts Exhibition” is a prime example of the museum’s efforts to reach out to those outside of the medical professions and invite them into the exciting life in discovery that the medical professions offer.
