The HealthPlex Center, scheduled to open March 28, 2012, will promote exercise and healthy nutritional habits through education and exercise programs for JCSU students, faculty and staff. In the fall, the center will also welcome the community for special classes and research-based programs. Community outreach efforts will incorporate exercise and nutrition education into an after-school program for students in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg School system.
On the energy efficiency side, the HealthPlex Center will feature low-E windows with a very low solar heat gain coefficient that substantially reduces radiant heat entering the building. The exterior glass will be shaded by a trellis extended along the building’s east and south elevations.
The building’s thermoplastic polyolefin (TPO) roofing with a white color membrane will reduce the heat island effect. Additionally, R-21 roofing insulation will reduce heat gain, decrease the interior cooling requirement and result in lower energy usage.
